Zero Waste McMinnville needs your help. As a good citizen recognizing the changes you can make in your personal life to minimize trash heading to the landfill but also as a volunteer at one of the events where we help organizers achieve amazing diversion rates away from the landfill.
Each year Zero Waste McMinnville provides assistance to the Downtown Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Heritage Museum, the Celtic Alliance and many more on ways their can aim for a zero waste event. We provide lists of compostable food service items for food vendors and then we help with garbage sort stations where event attendees can sort their trash into Compostables, Recyclables, and Landfill bags. The event organizers have experienced lower trash hauling fees from Recology with this intervention.
Each event is organized so volunteers usually have 3-hour shifts. This permits them to help without fatigue and also gives them a chance to enjoy!
The McMinnville Downtown Farmers’ Market begins Thursday, May 3rd and extends to Thursday, October 11th. Shifts run from noon-3p.m. and 3p.m.-6p.m. Two people are needed to help move bags from the Compostable/Recyclable/Landfill bins to the Zero Waste McMinnville booth. The Celtic Heritage Alliance is going to build on McMinnville’s Scottish connection and bring the “Mac” back this summer with the McMinnville Scottish Festival June 9th and 10th at Linfield College. Lots of people are needed to help with this: 6 Station Hosts, 2 Sorters, 1 Runner and 1 lead person for each 3-hour shift. Admission to this premium event is $5 for children and $10 per adult but if you volunteer with us, you will have free entry and can enjoy the activities before or after your shift! Another of McMinnville’s wonderful street fairs, Turkeyrama, is now on our minds. Please save July 13th and 14th to help. Again, there will be 3-hour shifts for Station Hosts, Runners, Sorters, and we will also have an information booth and we need that managed.
